Curriculum Guide


The purpose of Photography 30 is to provide you with the opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills used in photography and to become familiar with career opportunities within the industry.

Areas of focus for Photography 30 are to:

  • Develop technical skills in the use of cameras including the photography triangle.
  • Analyze and utilize the principles of composition and design.
  • Develop image manipulation skills to create aesthetically satisfying pictures.
  • Explore various occupations available in the ever-broadening field of photography.

This course will guide you through the content within an inquiry based framework. Inquiry learning is not a step-by-step process but rather a cyclical process with parts of the process being revisited and rethought as a result of your discoveries, insights, equipment, and construction of new knowledge. You are able to adapt the process and suggestions to meet your needs. There are many ways to accomplish each goal in this course. 


Course Information / Credit Recovery Units


Unit 1: Intro to Photography  Time : 7 Days

Level : Introductory

Outcome - What you will learn: Recognize and document the potential of photography as a communication medium through the exploration of a variety of images.

Describe and compare the aspects of a variety of purposes for photography (e.g., news report, wedding, advertising, hobby, art).

Compare a snapshot to a photograph with an impact that has endured through time (e.g., World Trade Centre, the Hindenburg Disaster, Terry Fox).

Discuss and categorize different styles of photography (e.g. journalism, portraiture, landscape) given a series of photographs.


Unit 2: Basic Photography Skills   Time: 20 Days

Outcome: To utilize and extend your skills related to assessing and demonstrating the effect of the photographic triangle (i.e., shutter speed, aperture and ISO) when capturing an image.

1. Create a variety of images demonstrating planning, including awareness of aspects such as focus, light manipulation, framing and the photographic triangle.

2. Create a log of camera settings, personal reflections, and knowledge regarding increasing skill level.

3. Load and unload stored media from the camera.


Unit 3: Image Adjustments    Time: 15 Days

Outcome: Demonstrate increasing expertise using software to improve digital images.

1. Manipulate original images too enhance their appearance.

2. Apply Advanced editing effects to create images such as:

·         selection tools

·         masking

·         brushes

·         vignette

·         dodging and burning

·         temperature adjustment.


Unit 4: Legal and Ethical Issues    Time: 5 Days

Outcome: Identify through research the positive and negative aspects of creative, artistic, and intellectual works receiving ownership protection.

1. Utilize the Canadian Intellectual Property Office to distinguish between copyright, a patent, and an industrial design, and identify some common examples pertaining to photography.

2. Collect and categorize a number of articles from various sources regarding intellectual property that reflect opposing points of view.


Unit 5: Portraiture     Time: 10 Days

Level: Advanced

Outcome: Develop and demonstrate techniques employed by portrait photographers.

Investigate the effects of lighting on subjects (e.g., supplementary lighting, reflectors).

Explore how various poses create emphasis.

Practice group arrangements to produce an effective group portrait.


Unit 6: Image Manipulation      Time: 25 Days

Outcome: Demonstrate increasing experience using software to perform advanced manipulation of digital images.

1. Apply software/editing effects to create personally satisfying images.

2. Manipulate an image to alter the appearance (e.g., colour, apparent age, masking).

3. Restore old or damaged photographs.

4. Apply tone-mapping using multiple images.


Unit 7: Artist Study    Time: 5 Days

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Outcome: Explore in depth how one professional photographer works.

·         Investigate the photographic process (e.g. camera, image manipulation, sharing, etc.) that the photographer uses to create their images and share the knowledge through a photographic presentation.

·         Create a visual presentation of the work of the artist including how they contribute to the advancements in their art or science of the field.


Unit 8: Social Media and Photography    Suggested Time: 25 Days

Level: Advanced

Outcome: Gain experience in the world of social media and how photographers use this powerful tool to further their career within the industry.

Develop an awareness of professional photographers using social media in Saskatchewan.

Gain on understanding for the development of appropriate social media skills that may lead to sustainable employment in the photography industry.

Establish standards of photographic requirements for social media platforms.

Demonstrate an understanding of essential skills in creating a presence on a social media platform.


Unit 8: Sharing Images   Suggested Time: 28 Days

Level: Advanced

Outcome: Create and display a digital gallery of completed images along with photographer's notes and descriptions of the process involved.

Create a plan for an exhibition including time, space, intended audience, and purpose.

Create a personally satisfying photography presentation through the use of, digital display options such as matting, and or framing.

Engage classmates and/or the public in a display of personally created photographs.

Create and assessment of the exhibition through personal reflection and feedback from others.
